You can play poker legally on http://www.spadeclub.com. It is sponsored by cardplayer magazine and if you use the code ACESFULL you can get hold of a two week free trial. It pays real cash prizes when you win. They substructure it on sweepstakes laws. You can use their totally free option also. You in recent times won't be able to play in their exclusive tournaments.
You can also play blackjack and poker at http://www.clububt.com, it will show you the prizes that you can play for. It does cost $20 month to go in. If you register and enter this code WEC97XUK, it will give you two free weeks on their site. I have a remunerated membership there and I've won concrete cash there and they do pay envelope.
Both sites are legal to play at in the USA.
You don't say if you are a USA Player, but I am going to bequeath you USA information, and it also applies ot most other countries, too.
Here is a link to some sites where you can play for FREE and still know how to win some great prizes and also some CASH. One of the sites has a tourney of $10,000 for their FREE players! And they are all USA decriminalized, players are protected by USA law in the event of problems. Here is the association:

if your seriously trying to win some prizes and possibly even cash, be careful playing contained by the free games. Its a madhouse with everybody going all surrounded by throughout the first two or three hands dealt. Theres nought to lose so everyone goes all within with weak cards. fold the first couple of hand and then you should be down to the better players who enjoy the winter sport and make it more fun and challenging.
The strategies with free money are pretty basic - lurk until you get a good paw then push it hard. Other players will be playing unconvincing hands since there's no real incentive to fold. There's a ton of free information on the internet going on for poker strategy although it's more geared toward real money games and would be way too tight for the benevolent of games you're talking about. The best piece of counsel though at these games is whoever folds the most wins but don't get too crazy beside the idea and wait for the best starting hand to play. Remember though that the more people in the pot, and there's other lots at free games, the stronger final hand you need so don't take carried away with even top pair because it more than plausible won't be good enough next to the 5 or more players fishing around. I'd stick any two cards of 10 or more, and suited connectors (2 consecutive cards of the same suit). Watch your position because the closer you are to the dealer the smaller quantity people will be acting in front of you and the smaller quantity chance you'll have to toss your mitt to too big of a raise downstream and lose your bet.
