How do you work out how heaps combinations at hand are surrounded by the national lottery. Excel get this no. 13983816?
I thought it was 49*48*47*46*45*44 but I was wrong.
Answers:
If you are talking about the National Lottery contained by the UK, you are right it is 13,983,815 to 1.
the esaiest instrument is to use COMBIN
Returns the number of combinations for a given number of items. Use COMBIN to determine the total possible number of groups for a given number of items.
Syntax
COMBIN(number,number_chosen)
Number is the number of items.
Number_chosen is the number of items in each combination.
so contained by a cell type =combin(49,6)
returns 13983816
Find a future-teller and ask him what he thinks.
(Seriously though, No one knows otherwise they would win the lottery respectively week) SORRY
The order in which the numbers are drawn does not thing, so divided your 49*48*47*46*45*44 by 6! (6 factorial)
The Excel amount is correct, but you are on the right lines too.
49*48*47*46*45*44 is the total number of combinations available. But that includes results such as 1,2,3,4,5,6 and 6,5,4,3,2,1 - which is the same result (for most normal 6 from 49 lotteries) because the ORDER does not business.
So you also need to divide the possible combinations by the number of ways they could be repeated.
Which is easier than it sounds, because it is the number of different ways you can order the six ball drawn. So same as you already did but for the 6 balls, i.e. 6*5*4*3*2*1.
So you get:
49*48*47*46*45*44 = 10,068,347,520
and,
6*5*4*3*2*1 = 720
so,
10,068,347,520 / 720 = 13,983,816
Simple as that :-)
