Betting all your money on Jepordy?
OK BIG pet peeve/unknown: OK so I watch Jepordy, in an attempt to learn more/cure boredom. Only one thing that doesn't make sense or maybe a rule I don't know about; when it's the final question and the person doesn't know the answer WHY do they bet all their money or all but a dollar and then just put a "?" or "don't know" why don't they just put "?" and only bet a dollar? Any one have any ideas?? I just don't get it...lol! Thanks :)

Because they decide how much they want to wager after they've heard the category, but before they've heard the correct response, that's why. So if they bet a lot of money they're hoping they know the question to the answer they haven't even heard yet, and if they wager very little they're just playin' it safe.
P.S. In Jeopardy they give you the answer and you respond with the question.

They only see the category before they have to choose an amount to bet. After they have wagered (and after the commercial), they see the question, so it's too late if they don't know the answer since they've already bet.
You have to make the bet before you know what the question is; you only get to know the category. The question is asked AFTER the bet is made.
First of all, the bet is placed before the question is asked. Second, a lot of times, people make their wagers based on their position. Your score makes no difference unless you win. If you place 3rd, you win $1,000. If you come in second, you win $2,000. Period, regardless of your final score. You could have $10,000 and if someone else has $10,001, you win two grand. Because of this, people make wagers that give them the best chance to win.
My personal opinion on Final Jeopardy wagers is this: if you are not in the lead, risk everything. If you are in the lead, risk enough so that if your nearest opponent doubles their money, you will beat them by one dollar. If it is a runaway (nobody can catch you even if they double), then assume you miss the question and wager enough to still have $1 more than double your nearest opponent's score.
