Small pocket pair in early position.?

Depends on the size of your pocket pair and the aggressiveness of the other players. Your best bet is to just call the blind to try and see a cheap flop. By raising you have already committed more chips then your hand is worth and if you have an aggressive player behind you that lucks into a hand you will be out for more then the minimum. By just calling will probably entice some weaker hands to raise pre-flop but you can decide then how deep your willing to go in for with out being in to much trouble. At best you are a coin flip pre-flop with any pocket pair to two over cards. You have two outs where as most others will have at least 6 if not more outs against you.
My suggestion is:
See it cheap if you can and take it down if you hit your trips.
i would raise moderately. Based on the action that follows, i would fold if i get reraised, or hopefully win the pot early (preflop) or worst case scenario im called by someone else. Low pocket pairs get weaker as more cards are put in play. Therefore you should try and win the pot early while your hand is at its strongest point.
Only two choices. very conservative and totally agressive.

2. You have to bet big enough to scare everyone off. If one person calls with a couple of over cards -- big slick, etc -- you still have roughly 50/50 odds, and continued agressive play may run the other guy out. If two people call, the odds are suddenly against you. More than two, and you are screwed.
Know the people you are playing -- only try the aggressive play if you are sure you can knock most players out of the hand.
Call in a loose game for set value.
Ii does depend on many things like how many chips do you have, is the table loose or tight and how does the table view you in how you are playing plus many other things. But in general if I'm first to act into a pot i like to raise, if it is not a Strong enough hand to raise with then you should fold it, especially if i was the big stack at the table, its 16-1 that no one else has a pair in the hole so at worst you are 50/50. So by raising here you are just hoping to pick up the blinds and antes in the pot. But limping in and seeing a flop with a lot of other callers is OK as well, because if you have many limper's in front of you, you are getting great value on your hand. If i flop a set then i play and if i don't i may prob bet, but I'm going to slow way down with a bad flop. I love limping in and flopping a set when someone else has made top two pair, remember sets break players.

This does depend on the situation but generaly you should fold and if your fist to enter the pot you dont want to limp be a raiser not a caller
