If you win $1,200 or more on a single pull from a slot machine, the IRS is required to be notified, and you are given the option of having federal taxes witheld.
If you cash in $10,000 in chips, the IRS is required to be notified.
But, when you file your taxes, you have two places to mention how much you won and lost:
Winnings go on the front of the 1040.
Losses go on the back of Schedule A (itemized deductions).
The losses you claim on the back can not be more than the winnings you claim on the front.
But if you do plan on claiming gambling losses, you need to keep a diary of every trip you made to a casino (just in case you're audited)
